The Federation Science Vessels (comprised of the Nova, Aurora and Quasar classes) are charged with mapping newly discovered planets. They often have more extensive laboratory equipment, advanced sensors and advanced compared to other ships of the same tier.
Players will be able to choose a Science Vessel once they achieve the rank of Lieutenant Commander 1. The Nova, Aurora and Quasar rely upon their innate ability to tactically target the subsystems of enemy ships to rapidly weaken them and detect cloaked ships to support fellow ships in battle. That said, the advanced shielding (the best of Tier 2 ships) allows them to function well on their own, as is their middle-of-the-road crew complements and movement speeds.
Subsystem targeting depends on your Auxiliary Power. Players can target enemy Weapons, Shields, Engines and Auxiliary. Each one is on its own timer and they only are effective on beam weapon hits, so the more beams the better you will do. Using two different types of beams allows you to activate two subsystem targetings at once.
